Take Me Higher
An expanded cinema experience including OKO

This event presents simultaneous film screenings across the spaces of the Glamourie show. Connecting the 1960ʼs and 1970ʼs to now, from a uniquely Leeds
perspective, it will introduce themes that will be central to the following Dark Heart > M1 event with Anthony Clavane and John Lake. Films will include Billy Liar (1963) and Take Me High (1973). OKO will be presenting the documentary Leeds 78 as part of a wider performance.

In Promised Land, Anthony Clavane argues that both its football team and the city of Leeds itself are typified by a combination of brash assertiveness and parochial
anxiety. A north/south, Leeds/London dynamic (at work in aspects of Glamourie) will be the starting point of a talk and public discussion between Clavane and the writer, musician and novelist John Lake, exploring these ideas in some depth, and looking at the similarities and differences between the impact they have on different aspects of culture - football, visual art, the music scene, literature and drama.

Allure
Leah Capaldi a performance work alongside film screenings

Leah Capaldiʼs performance work, Allure, will interact with films screened throughout the exhibition space that explore themes of glamour, allure and seduction.
Collapsing the boundaries between performance and sculpture, Leah Capaldi explores themes of exploitation, power and object in response to cultural influences. Embedded in social references, her performances challenge gender and political
stereotypes. The critic Elizabeth Homersham, writing about this yearʼs New Contemporaries at the ICA described Capaldiʼs performance as “the only piece I
could identify as new - it engaged with senses previously untouched by any art work I have experienced before and, though invisible, interacted brilliantly at times with other elements of the show”.

For this element in the Dark Heart > M1 programme, Derek Horton and Ellen Sankey have selected books in three venues in Leeds for their diverse connections with aspects of the ideas and themes of the Glamourie exhibition, and their resonance with the contexts that have been explored in other aspects of Dark Heart > M1. Reflecting the eclectic mix to be found in the exhibition, they have chosen books on a wide variety of subjects from a broad range of disciplines and genres.
For two weeks, these will be on display at Waterstone’s and at The Leeds Library, and will be available through a printed reading list at the Library of the Henry Moore Institute.
Adjacent Data will open up new ways of seeing and thinking about Glamourie, take the exhibition into other venues in the city, and add another layer of complexity to its already rich juxtaposition of images, objects and ideas.

This event marks the culmination of the Dark Heart > M1 events series. Over the duration of Glamourie it has presented talks, screenings and performance events to critique, amplify and contextualise the exhibition, drawing in new frames of reference and other genres and disciplines.
In this final event, Dark Heart > M1 (Chris Bloor + Derek Horton) come face-to-face for the first time with some of the Glamourie artists and the show’s curator, David Steans.
There will be a panel discussion, chaired by Derek Horton, aimed at generating a critical dialogue around the themes of the exhibition between the panel members and the audience. The panel will bring together Simeon Barclay, Matthew Crawley, Josephine Flynn, Joseph Lewes, Harry Meadley, David Steans. Other Glamourie artists will be present and will join with the audience in contributing to the discussion from the floor.

Snap Like A Diva workshop

This one day workshop is led by artists Harold Offeh and will explore the glamourous world of snapping or clicking. Snapping is the proccess of clicking your fingers together in an ostentatious and often overtly attention seeking manner. Snapping is derived from the Black American gay sub-culture of the 80s and 90s and consists of a series of movements that allow people to communicate. Documentaries like Tongues United and Paris is Burning have exposed this culture to a wider audience, leading to the Vogueing dance craze of the 90s.
The workshop will offer participants of all abilities an opportunity to learn about the history of snapping. Then through a practical session participants will acquire the basic skills to communicate and perform fabulous and expressive moves. The session will end with a collective performance by the newly graduated class of snapping Diva's. So what you waiting for? Snap to it!
