PSL presents an exhibition of new work by artist Jason Minsky who spent 12 months working as Artist in Residence at Leeds Rugby Foundation.
For the last year Jason has been responding to Headingley Carnegie Stadium’s unique environment and its community. New projects begun during the residency now form an exhibition at PSL [Project Space Leeds], at Whitehall Waterfront in Leeds’ city centre. The work ranges across video, photography, installation, multiples, performance, sound and even karaoke, and often employs humour as a strategy to unpick the conventions and rituals of the sporting environment. Besides making a dramatic intervention into PSL’s spacious interior, the work also seeks to connect the inside gallery space with its exterior waterfront location.
The residency was initiated in 2006 by Leeds Rugby Arts Steerting Group, which subsequently became a partner project supported by Leeds Rugby Foundation, the charitable trust for both rugby clubs in the city, with support from Arts Council England and Leeds Metropolitan University. Working mostly with the Leeds Rhinos, it’s the club’s first ever residency and forms part of a larger strategic policy that seeks to enable the arts to express and celebrate the ethos and character of Leeds Rugby.
The exhibition is curated by PSL’s Directors Pippa Hale, Kerry Harker and Diane Howse.
