An enquiry through drawing by John Thorp, Civic Architect, into the development of Leeds. Also featuring work by contemporary artists Leo Fitzmaurice, Lucy Gibson and Nichola Pemberton
5 July - 8 September 2007
Since 2003 John Thorp has been working on a project to explore and
represent the many dimensions of Leeds as a rapidly changing city. His
challenge has been not only to discover the nature of 21st Century
Leeds, but also to find a way to represent the enormous complexity of
its 800-year old history. The result is an ongoing series of drawings
which translate this complex information into visually engaging
drawings that differ radically from those traditionally produced by
architects. Colourful, energetic, immediate and sometimes on a
staggering scale, these map/drawings convey the image of the city as a
living organism.
Building on the ideas and processes of John
Thorp’s project, The Mapping Project invites active engagement and
collaboration. It is an interactive platform for discussion between
official civic planning and informal grass-roots experiences, as lived
by artists and audiences. John Thorp and his team will be using the PSL
space as a studio throughout the exhibition, and a number of workshops
and seminars will explore mapping, drawing and civic design.
Artists
Leo Fitzmaurice, Lucy Gibson and Nichola Pemberton present their own
projects in parallel and will also be engaged in discussion and
collaboration with John to look at the role of artists within city
planning and the development of the visual arts sector in Leeds.
