Three group shows by artists from London, Manchester and members of the Art House in Wakefield
10 September – 10 December 2011
In a new exhibition and programme of events at PSL, this ambitious project brings together artists’ groups from around the UK (London, Manchester, Wakefield) under the title Peering Sideways. Perhaps this suggests looking askance, or taking a fresh look, at something familiar. It also hints at the artist-peers taking part in the show, which aims to examine the idea of collectivity, whether through a collaborative practice, the formation of artists’ groups, affiliation through studio membership or simply choosing peers to present their work alongside in a group format.
The project also aims to expand the networks of the participating artists and groups, sparking new relationships and collaborations. The project comprises three separate group shows running concurrently, with some of the work developing in the space over the course of the project. The projects are ‘Other People’s Problems’, ‘Sorry For The Inconvenience’ and ‘Welcome to the Real World’.
Peering Sideways is kindly supported by The Works Recruitment, a specialist recruitment agency founded in 1991 with offices across the North. www.theworksrec.co.uk
PSL is supported by Arts Council England and Leeds City Council.

Peering
Sideways artists' talks and publications launch
Saturday 26th November 2 - 5pm
Come and join us for an afternoon of Artists talks and to have the first look
at the final Peering Sideways Publications whilst taking in the current project
and shows.
2pm - Lois Palframan 'Drawing and Punishment': Taking the title of her
talk from Dostoevsky and Foucault (Foucault's 'Discipline and Punish' being
where the artist stopped reading Structuralism) Lois Palframan invites you to
join her while she recounts 15 drawings that she made between the ages of about
7 and 35, when she consciously started practicing as an artist. Noting how the
disciplines of writing, reading and maths are seen to have formative affects
upon our learning, Palframan asks whether these first attempts at drawings have
equally affected her life despite such drawings generally being seen as
extra-curricula, invisible, throwaway, unimportant or un-serious until labelled
as Art.
2.30pm - Tea and Coffee break
2.45pm - Lee Machell ' Match
Drawing' Demonstration: Artist Lee Machell will illustrate the process behind his Match
Drawings.
3pm - Mike Chavez-Dawson 'Inter-textual-ventions,Part 2'and'Post-Medium Postulation' Screening: A performative - informative lecture by interdisciplinary
artist/curator Mike Chavez-Dawson who will focus on his ‘Artour’ [sic] bodies
of work. These 'Artours’ investigate the notion that ‘performative’ methods can
be utilised as live interpretative texts to exude a playful yet critical eye
over existing shows and collections in order to extend a symbiotic relation
between the object and the live. He will also re-perform a
‘paragraphic-live-text’ piece titled ‘Bricks, Bush, Wood &Water’ that will
draw a narrative between Carl Andre’s ‘Equivalent 8,’ a cover version of
‘Hounds of Love’ by Kate Bush and Michael Craig-Martin’s ‘An Oak Tree’. As well
debuting a new short low-fi film titled 'Post-Medium Postulation' specifically
created as a reflective text for 'Enter a Small Room Arranged For this Purpose,
Part 2' that was presented by Untitled Gallery at PSL.
4pm - 'Sorry For The Inconvenience' and 'Welcome
to the Real World' Publications Launch: Join us for a seasonal afternoon drink to toast the
launch of the final Peering Sideways newspaper publication. Each 12-page full
