Jim Brogden and Matthew Shelton
20 November 2009 - 27 February 2010 Private view 19 November, 6-8pm Christmas party 17 December, 5-9pm
In Signs of Life Jim Brogden’s investigation of Leeds’ post-industrial urban landscape explores abandoned corners and wastelands, photographing them and revealing what the artist terms ‘an alternative to the increasing homogenisation of the urban landscape, a different beauty.’
Matthew Shelton’s work Herzog involves the collection, washing, ironing and drawing upon pieces of A4 paper – certificates of achievement, ASBOs, shopping lists found on the streets of Leeds – and provides a different yet complementary exploration into perceptions of waste and detritus. Shelton also brings his work Harry Thubron, pieces of found scrap wood arranged and fixed to the wall intuitively, in response to the available space and light, as one might make a collage with paper.
